The new patriarch of Lisbon said this Sunday that “everyone has a place in the Church”, said he wants to see the fruits of World Youth Day in “action”, and spoke of the Church’s “serious commitment” to the search for peace. , namely in Ukraine.
These were some of the points of the sermon delivered by the new Patriarch Rui Valeriu at the solemn entrance to the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, at a ceremony attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Mayor of Lisbon. , Carlos Moedas, former President of the Republic Cavaco Silva, as well as high-ranking representatives of the government, the Assembly of the Republic, the armed forces, civil and religious society.
Recognizing the beginning of a “new stage” for the Church and emphasizing the importance and significance of holding the last World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, which has remained a “landmark” of faith, hope and enthusiasm for youth, the Patriarch asked for “intimacy” and relationships with others for the Church. He mentioned Fernando Pessoa when he said: “To live is to be different” (“Livro do Desassossego” by Bernardo Soares).
During the solemn entrance of the 18th Patriarch of Lisbon, Rui Valeriu also mentioned the issue of sexual violence and war in Ukraine, recalling on the latter issue that Pope Francis had already compared this conflict to the Third World War, with the need to seek peace.
“The Church of Lisbon is seriously committed to peace,” the patriarch emphasized, calling for cooperation between the Church, the state, the armed forces and society as a whole to ensure coexistence between institutions and the search for peace.
