The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) this Saturday expressed its solidarity with Morocco, Portugal’s partner in its bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain, in response to the earthquake that killed at least 632 people on Friday.
“The FPF deeply regrets and expresses its deepest condolences to Morocco and everyone affected by today’s terrible earthquake,” the federation said in a statement.
On Friday at 23:11 local time (the same time in Lisbon), an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred with an epicenter in the city of Igil, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakech, which killed at least 632 people and 329 people. injuries, 51 of which are in serious condition, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Interior.
“A hospitable country full of energy and joy, Morocco partnered with Portugal and Spain in creating a wonderful candidacy that, from the very beginning, set out to unite Africa and Europe. To see a tragedy of this magnitude plaguing our friends comes as a huge shock and sadness to us,” the FPF continued.
In this sense, and in response to the damage caused by the earthquake, which was also felt in Spain and Portugal, the FPF reaffirmed its solidarity.
“By expressing our solidarity in words, as well as in all initiatives that can ease your pain, I extend a heartfelt hug to Morocco,” the FPF concluded.
