The economist and first president of the Council of Public Finance, Theodora Cardoso, died this Saturday in Lisbon at the age of 81, a source at Banco de Portugal told Lusa.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa mourned her death, remembering the “recognized and respected” economist whose “life was dedicated” to country and public causes.
The president “regrets the death of Teodora Cardoso, a recognized and respected economist who devoted her entire life to the country with a high sense of mission and complete dedication to public service, and in recent years took part in public finances,” the released note said. Teodora Cardoso was born in Estremoz and received a degree in economics from the Higher Institute of Economics. She spent most of her career at Banco de Portugal and is currently retired.
She worked as an economist at the central bank for almost two decades, headed the Department of Statistics and Economic Research, and was an administrative consultant and administrator from 2008 to 2012.
From March 1973 to September 1992, she served in the Department of Statistics and Economic Studies, serving as Monetary Economics Core Coordinator, Division Director, and Administrative Consultant.
In addition, he participated in several central bank projects, namely the drafting of the Basic Law of the Bank of Portugal (1975) and the general reform of monetary statistics (1976/1977).
She participated in the negotiations of stabilization agreements with the International Monetary Fund (1984/1985) and represented the Bank of Portugal in the Subcommittee on Monetary Policy of the Governing Committee of the European Community from 1990 to 1992.
In 1992, she began working at Banco Português de Investimento, where she was an administrative consultant until 2008, according to her biography on the page of the Public Finance Council, an organization created as a result of the financial adjustment program and which she led. from 2012 and 2019.
She was replaced by university professor Nazaré Costa.
