The African Development Bank (ADB) announced this Sunday its readiness to provide resources and expertise to help rebuild infrastructure damaged by the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday.
“I would like to assure His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the people of the Kingdom of Morocco that the African Development Bank Group is ready to provide resources and expertise to rebuild damaged infrastructure in communities,” says AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina. in a statement after the earthquake in Morocco, the death toll exceeded 2,100 people.
The official adds that ADB teams are on the ground and ensures that the African Development Bank is “ready to provide much-needed support.”
Akinwumi Adesina stresses that the African Development Bank is prioritizing support for the protection of health facilities and the provision of drinking water to avoid further difficulties.
“The earthquake that occurred in Morocco on the night of Friday, September 8, 2023, was devastating. More than two thousand people were killed and hundreds were injured, and it brought much sadness and untold hardship to many families who lost loved ones. The Moroccan nation and people have endured great pain,” the ADB president said, expressing himself “shocked and deeply saddened by the heavy loss of life in this tragedy.”
In a statement, Akinwumi Adesina expresses his “most sincere condolences” to King Mohammed VI, the government of the Kingdom of Morocco and all the families who are “mourning the loss of their loved ones.”
“Words are difficult to express our shared sense of grief and loss,” he also says, wishing a “speedy recovery” for those injured.
The latest preliminary assessment of the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday evening showed the death toll had risen to 2,122 and the number of injured to 2,421, according to the Moroccan Interior Ministry.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the city of Isis, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakesh, was felt in Portugal and Spain, reaching a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics of Marrakech. .
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.8.
