Autoeuropa begins a production shutdown today that has already led to hundreds of layoffs

Volkswagen Autoeuropa’s Palmela plant begins a nine-week production shutdown this Monday that has already led to the layoff of hundreds of precarious workers.

In addition to the 100 temporary workers laid off at the German automaker Volkswagen, several companies in the industrial park have also announced their intention to lay off dozens of temporary or fixed-term workers.

By last Friday, Autoeuropa and supplier companies had already confirmed the dismissal of 291 agency workers, according to the coordinator of the Industrial Park’s work committees.

However, the Union of Manufacturing, Energy and Environmental Workers of the South (SITE-Sul) assured that it is already aware of a total of 560 layoffs.

The stoppage of production at the Autoeuropa car plant in Palmela, Setubal district, from September 11 to November 12 is due to the difficulties of the supplier in Slovenia, which was seriously affected by the floods that occurred in early August in that country.

Autoeuropa, which decided to resort to “cuts” during the production shutdown, will ensure that its workers are paid 95% of wages, but there are several companies in the industrial park that are preparing for pay cuts of 5%, 10% and 33%.
