The president of the Spanish Football League, Javier Tebas, said this Monday that South America’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup could benefit from differences with the federation’s former president, Luis Rubiales.
“I went to Uruguay and Argentina, who want to organize the World Cup, as does Spain. [em conjunto com Portugal e Marrocos]. They believe that what happened can benefit them in these elections, but I can’t say more,” commented Javier Tebas.
The director acknowledged that he does not have the role of protecting the reputation of Spanish football, but said that they were working together to ensure that what happened did not happen again following the events of recent weeks.
At issue is the behavior of Luis Rubiales, who meanwhile resigned as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after facing several accusations and lawsuits, internal and external, due to inappropriate behavior at the Women’s World Cup final. in which he kissed a player without consent and grabbed his genitals at the honor stand.
“It is not enough to ask for forgiveness, we must work to ensure that there is no risk of this happening again,” said Javier Tebas.
The League’s top leader also compared the negative impact of the entire situation to the March 11, 2004 terrorist attacks in Madrid, known as 11-M, which killed nearly two hundred people and injured more than 2,000.
“We followed the follow-up actions that were given [na Argentina e no Uruguai] press, and the damage was enormous. In digital media, it was news from Spain that had the greatest impact in history, even more than 11-M and other events that happened in Spain. This worried me,” the La Liga president added.
Tebas’ reaction, which ensured that he did not want federal control and that it was the associations that should determine the future of the federation, came a day after Luis Rubiales resigned from his position and when he had already been removed from office.
