Severe storms and floods have killed more than 2,000 people in eastern Libya in recent days, Libya’s shadow prime minister said. In a conversation with the TV news anchor of the Libyan Al-Masar channel, Osama Hamad said that “there are thousands of missing people, and the death toll exceeds two thousand.” Storm Daniel has already hit the cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Al Bayda, Al Marj and Derna.
Among the missing are seven members of the Libyan National Army, the force led by Khalida Haftar that controls the eastern part of the divided country.
According to eyewitnesses, in the coastal city of Derna the water level reached three meters.
The Prime Minister of Tripoli’s interim government, Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, declared three days of mourning in all affected cities, calling them “disaster zones.”
Relief operations are continuing, according to Reuters. Authorities declared a state of emergency and closed schools and shops. A mandatory curfew was also imposed.
