About a third of the city of Derna in eastern Libya was destroyed by flooding after a dam broke during Hurricane Daniel. More than a thousand bodies have been recovered so far, the administration minister in charge of the east of the country, quoted by the newspaper, said on Tuesday. Reuters.
“I returned from Derna. The situation is very catastrophic. Bodies are everywhere – in the sea, in the valleys, under buildings,” said Hichem Shkiwat, civil aviation minister and member of the Syrian emergency committee. Reutersadding that the death toll is expected to be “very, very high.”
“I’m not exaggerating when I say that 25% of the city has disappeared. Many, many buildings have collapsed,” the minister lamented.
Authorities in the eastern part of the country announced this Monday that at least two thousand people have died as a result of Hurricane Daniel and that “thousands more” are missing due to floods.
“The death toll is huge and could reach thousands,” said Tamer Ramadan, head of the International Federation of the Red Cross delegation in Libya, as quoted by Reuters.
