Floods in Libya have killed more than 5,300 people. Authorities believe the death toll could double

More than 5,300 bodies have been found in the city of Derna in Libya, and the death toll is expected to increase significantly and may even double, Libya’s regional administration minister was quoted as saying this Wednesday by ReutersAfter flooding caused by a levee failure during Hurricane Daniel.

“The sea is constantly dumping dozens of bodies,” said Hishem Abu Shkiwat, civil aviation minister in the administration that runs eastern Libya, adding that recovery would cost billions of dollars.

According to ReutersThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said at least 30,000 people had fled Derna, the city hardest hit by Hurricane Daniel.

The IOM added that 6,085 people are known to have been forced to flee their homes in other areas affected by the storm, including Benghazi, with the death toll yet to be confirmed.

“IOM and its partners are immediately delivering relief goods, medicine, search and rescue equipment and personnel to the affected areas,” the source added.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the eastern Libyan administration, the number of missing people as a result of floods in Libya was about 10 thousand people, and the death toll had already exceeded 5,200 this Tuesday.
