UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Croatia, the country’s football federation said on Wednesday, following the display of a World War II-era fascist flag at a match against Latvia.
The Croatian Federation explains that supporters raised the flag of the Ustaše regime, a far-right nationalist party that came to power in 1941 during World War II.
Croatia is already under UEFA jurisdiction for “discriminatory behavior” by fans at the Nations League in June in the Netherlands.
In this situation, the federation was banned from selling tickets for the game played at home on Monday, in which they beat Armenia 1-0.
The latest investigation could see UEFA punish Croatia with an obligation to host Turkey behind closed doors in a Euro 2024 qualifier on October 12 in Osijek.
Croatia tops the qualifying group for the European Championship with the same 10 points as Turkey but having played one fewer game.
