The Polish Football Federation officially announced this Wednesday the dismissal of Fernando Santos as the country’s national coach.
The press has already reported on the decision, which was made in the last few hours after Sunday’s defeat to Albania.
The departure of the former Portuguese coach is directly related to the results of qualification for the European Championship 2024. Poland have only 6 points in five games, thanks to victories over Albania (1-0) and the Faroe Islands (2-0). They lost to the Czech Republic (1-3), Moldova (2-3) and Albania (0-2), so it is difficult for them to directly qualify for a theoretically very accessible group.
“Although we are ending our partnership, I am grateful to lead the Polish national team and wish all the best to Poland and its people, who received me so well when I lived here,” Fernando Santos said, as quoted by the federation.
Federation President Cesar Kules expects to announce the new coach soon: “The selection of a new coach is now a priority for the federation leadership, so we will soon announce when the new coach will be presented.”
