Portuguese swimmer Miguel Arrobas will take part in the Lisbon ultramarathon on Saturday and swim 20 kilometers along the Tagus River to support Mary’s Meals, which provides school meals for millions of children.
Miguel Arrojas was one of the swimmers who represented Portugal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and three decades later he continues to swim, this time to support a cause.
On Saturday he will compete in the World Open Water Swimming Association’s UltraMarathon Swim Series in Lisbon, where he will be collecting donations to support Mary’s Meals.
The institution, founded in 2002, feeds more than 2.4 million children every day in poor communities in 18 countries and estimates that €22.11 is enough to guarantee daily school meals for an entire year.
The goal of Miguel Arrojas, who is challenging himself to swim 20 kilometers along the Tagus River, is to raise money to support several dozen children.
In addition to collecting donations on race day, the swimmer is already collecting help through bank transfers, the Mary’s Meals Portugal website and a platform through which he has already received around €170.
Another 47 swimmers of different nationalities will take part in the race, which will start near Padrão dos Descobrimentos and end in Cascais.
In addition to the 20-kilometer distance, there is another shorter race of 10 kilometers, involving 88 registered swimmers who begin the crossing to Carcavelos.
