Marcelo meets with the Portuguese community in New York State today

The President of the Republic meets this Thursday with the Portuguese emigrant community in the state of New York, on the fourth day of his visit to the United States of America to attend the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting with the Portuguese community will take place in Tarrytown, about 50 kilometers north of New York City, at the New York Portuguese American Leadership Association (NYPALC) Gala, followed by dinner.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in the United States on Sunday evening to take part in the annual general debate between the heads of state and government of the 193 member countries of the United Nations (UN).

In his speech on Tuesday, he called on world leaders to move from promises to action to reform the UN, particularly its Security Council, and global financial institutions.

“Year after year we promise. It’s time to get results,” he said.

This week, the head of state met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and also spoke at summits on sustainable development and climate change, as well as in open debates in the UN Security Council on Ukraine.

This Thursday, before the meeting in Tarrytown, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s program includes a tour of Manhattan, New York, visiting the Portuguese shops in Times Square.

The President of the Republic, who was in Canada last week on a five-day official visit, will return to Portugal on Friday evening after meeting with the Portuguese community in New Jersey.

In New York, the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, held bilateral meetings to, among other things, promote Portugal’s candidacy for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the biennium. 2027-2028
