Portuguese judoka Rochelle Nunez won the silver medal at the Baku Grand Slam tournament in the +78 kg category this Sunday, which was the best result of the Portuguese competing in Azerbaijan.
The last day of the tournament was also marked by the fifth place of Jorge Fonseca in the weight category up to 100 kg, who was defeated in one of the fights for the bronze medal.
Rochelle started by getting a bye in the first round and then beat Dominican Moira Morillo in the second to advance to the quarterfinals.
She then fought against Turkey’s Hilal Ozturk, who also reached the semifinals, and Russia’s Elis Startseva.
The most rated rival of the Portuguese was the Brazilian Beatrice Souza, who took seventh place in the ranking, Rochelle – 15th. The Portuguese judoka would lose the final, receiving three penalties.
Jorge Fonseca (14th place in the ranking) also went straight to the second round, where Kazakhstan’s Bekarys Saduakas did not appear. After that, he beat the Brazilian Leonardo Goncalves.
In the quarterfinals, the Portuguese judoka lost to Russian Matvey Kanikovsky, winning the repechage.
The German George Udsilauri then won and thereby won the right to fight for bronze, but lost to the Frenchman Aurelien Disse and took one of the fifth places.
On Saturday, João Fernando (-81 kg) and Barbara Timo (-63 kg) also finished fifth. On Friday, Thelma Monteiro was seventh in the 57kg weight class.
