They work but live in tents near Carcavelos beach because they cannot pay rent.

Many people have jobs, but their salaries are not enough to cover all their expenses. Thus, Carcavelos beach becomes a daily spectacle for many who choose to live in tents in the pine forest belonging to Quinta dos Ingleses.

Nine people were forced to live this lifestyle to avoid high incomes. This has been Nelson Ferreira’s reality for at least two years. He started living on the beach, but because of the tide he had to pitch a tent in a pine forest near St Julian’s College.

“The rent is high and we cannot pay it. For now, I will stay here,” says the 20-year-old, who uses the Carcavelos parish association to meet needs such as food and bathing.

“I can no longer imagine sleeping in the house, it’s my comfort,” he admitted. Nelson’s neighbors are Joao Mendes, 33, and Daniel Araujo, 40. He works in the restaurant sector as a waiter, has no contract and earns 30 euros per day. An unemployed woman looks for work every day.

Two months ago, the couple began living in a tent after being evicted from a home where there was a rental promise that had not been kept. “Everyone has their own routine, but for us it’s work-half-work and half-work,” says the man, who has already given up hope of finding support because “all requests for help have been rejected.”

MINORS in the institution
The two youngest children, Joao and Daniel, 5 and 10 years old, are in the shelter. They promised to help the couple with permanent housing, but this did not happen. Thus, they lost custody of their children, whom they call daily and can only visit once a week for an hour.

BEACH WATER
Many residents of the pine forest go to Carcavelos beach to fetch water to ensure daily hygiene.

SON WITH GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDFATHER
ABOUT CM He also spoke with another resident of the pine forest. The man placed his four-year-old son in the care of his maternal grandparents and now works on construction sites to feed the child. He lives in a tent for about three months.
MORE HOME
The vast majority of respondents (74.6%) are asking the government and local authorities to build public housing for affordable rentals, which they consider the “best solution” to the housing crisis.

NEW LAW
One solution is to change the law to provide more security to owners of non-rental homes, with 59.1% saying this would give homeowners “confidence” when entering the rental or buying property market.

PROTEST OF THE 30TH
A demonstration is planned for September 30 to demand additional measures to combat housing problems. The organizer of the action is the Casas para Viver movement.
