The Professional Police Union (SPP/PSP) spoke out this Monday against the government’s intention to create “civilian police stations” in parish councils, believing that the real problems of the PSP will remain unresolved.
In its statement, the SPP/PSP believes that the “civilian forces” announced by the Home Secretary last Friday are moving “in the opposite direction of what the PSP needs.”
“Given the large number of police stations in Lisbon (many of them with a reduced distance between them), knowing that they are usually open 24 hours a day, every day of the week, this measure will exacerbate the shortage of police officers ready to respond.” to priority situations without solving the real problem,” the union says.
The SPP/PSP stresses that it “does not support these types of measures”, raising “serious doubts about their effectiveness”, including regarding the physical integrity of police officers and the specificity of their role.
The Professional Police Union also believes the minister should focus on addressing the serious issues affecting the Public Safety Police rather than this “type of media coverage.”
The Association of Professional Police Officers (ASPP/PSP) also questioned over the weekend how the government wants to prepare “eggless omelettes” to support the functioning of “civilian police stations”, given the shortage of personnel in the PSP.
José Luis Carneiro announced that the government intends to create “civilian police stations” in parish councils, which will function as places of assistance where crimes such as theft can be reported.
A government official explained that the new concept of “civilian police stations” will be implemented in consultation with the parishes and customer service will be provided by PSP police officers.
José Luis Carneiro also said that preparations are currently underway for the creation of the first pilot project of a “civilian unit” in the municipality of Lisbon, but refused to say which parish they were talking about.
