The previous president of the China Football Federation was charged with corruption on Tuesday for allegedly accepting bribes while he led the organization, the Asian country’s judicial authorities said on Tuesday.
According to information released by the Hubei Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, Chen Xiuyuan, who was investigated as part of a large-scale anti-corruption campaign in China, is suspected of receiving “high-value bribes.”
The investigation into the former Chinese federation president was initially launched by sports authorities in February over alleged “serious disciplinary and legal violations.”
The anti-corruption campaign launched by the Chinese government is targeting some of the country’s top football figures, such as former player and coach Li Tie, China’s seventh most capped football player (92).
