The price of milk for production has fallen by 11 cents per liter in five months, the Portuguese Milk Producers Association (Aprolep) said this Wednesday, lamenting a new price cut of three cents for Lactogal cooperatives.
“Dairy producers associated with cooperatives belonging to the Lactogal group have been informed of a price reduction of three cents per liter of milk from October 1,” which is justified by developments in the market, Aprolep said in a statement.
The association also said that another buyer, whose name was not disclosed, also announced a reduction of two cents per liter.
According to data released this Wednesday by Aprolep, the price for producers fell by about 11 cents per liter over five months, “without recording an identical reduction in production costs.”
The decline comes a week after the release of the Price Observatory’s UHT milk value chain study, which concluded that milk producers’ marketing margins were negative in the half of 2021.
Dairy producers in Portugal have also signed a proposal by the European Milk Board (EMB), an association of European milk producers that includes Aprolep, to activate voluntary production cuts at European level by paying farmers “fair prices so that they do not have more agricultural companies going bankrupt, rural areas remain dynamic and the European Union has stable security of supply.”
