Manchester City tops the English League Cup at the feet of Newcastle

Manchester City, the reigning English and European football champions, were eliminated from the League Cup this Wednesday by beating Newcastle 1-0 in the third round.

Ahead are Fulham, coached by the Portuguese Marco Silva, as well as the historical Liverpool (3-1 against Leicester, Diogo Jota’s goal), Arsenal (1-0 against Brentford) and Chelsea (1- 0 against Brighton).

The Sky Blues, having enjoyed a perfect league campaign, took a risk and brought a team of essentially newbies to St James’ Park. They handled the experience poorly and lost their second tournament of the season – the first was the Community Shield, which they lost to Arsenal.

Obviously, after a clean sheet at home to Milan and an 8-0 win against Sheffield, Newcastle did everything to win, but the victory turned out to be a “rare” one, costing Alexander Isak a goal in the 53rd minute.

Mateus Nunez was the only Portuguese player in the game for City, taking the field at 68 years of age. Ruben Dias remained on the bench while Bernardo Silva continues to recover from a knee injury.

Fulham, coached by Portuguese Marco Silva and Joao Palinha as their central strategist, hosted and beat Championship side Norwich 2–1.

At Craven Cottage, Fulham took the lead through Brazilian Carlos Vinicius (12th minute) before making it 2-0 with a goal from Nigerian Iwobi (72).

Spaniard Borja Sainz, aged 75, reduced the score to 2-1.

Diogo Jota completed the scoring in the 89th minute for Liverpool against Leicester, also in the second division. The other Reds goals were scored by Gakpo (48) and Szoboszlai (70).

Leicester, with Ricardo Pereira in central defence, took the lead in the third minute through McAteer’s goal but were ultimately unsure what to do with the advantage.

Chelsea beat Brighton 1-0 (Jackson’s goal in the 50th minute) and Arsenal beat Brentford by the same margin (Nelson 08).

Beto came on as a substitute in Everton’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa in Birmingham.
