PAN representative in Madeira resigned and left the party

PAN’s regional representative for Madeira, Joaquim Sousa, has decided to resign and leave the party, saying he does not trust leader Ines de Sousa Real, whom he accused of facilitating the “Stalinist purge”.

“I have decided to leave the party, but not because of environmental issues, I will always be an environmentalist,” Joaquim Sousa said in a statement to Lusa, indicating that the decision was announced Thursday evening in a letter sent to national party structures after the meeting National Political Commission.

In a letter to which Lusa had access, the mayor announced that as of Friday he had ceased to be a regional representative of PAN, as well as “to be part of PAN,” justifying that “it is impossible to continue to work with a representative who sponsors coups in the local structures of PAN , promotes purges for crimes of belief, lies about current facts in order to determine the actions of dissenting party members.”

“I cannot accept so many regulatory violations being committed by a national representative who uses and abuses laws for his own pleasure to further his dreams and personal vendettas, with the aggravating factor that a regional body is useless because our decisions are ignored. our media were pirated by your office, the choice is yours and, allegedly on your recommendation, the regional political commission ceased its activities,” the letter says.

The outgoing leader indicated that he took this decision because “the situation itself was radical” and indicated that he had “no political confidence in Ines de Sousa Real and her Permanent Political Commission.”

“In good conscience, I could not continue to carry out the orders of Dr. Ines de Souza Real. I prefer to leave with the civil and political freedom that I understand I should have, without worrying about the hierarchy and disciplinary rules of parties like the PAN. , in which the representative wants to control everything and everyone, limiting the freedom of everyone,” he emphasized.

Recalling that on Thursday he demanded the resignation of the party’s national representative, Joaquim Sousa said: “It was either her or me.”

On Thursday evening, the party’s highest decision-making body, between congresses, decided to immediately suspend the Madeira regional representative and launch a disciplinary investigation for jeopardizing the party’s “good name”.

When asked about this decision, the director said that he was not informed and that he knew about it at the time, but believed that the decision had “already been made.”

“They need me to leave because in order to sign the agreement with PSD/Madeira they must not ignore the Regional Political Commission of Madeira, and that is what they did,” he said, pointing out that the party had entered a “spiral of lawlessness.” .

The outgoing representative also believes that “this was simply an obstacle in the way of Ines de Souza Real and her friends.”

Joaquim Souza said that he participated in part of the meeting of the National Political Commission, at which he answered questions from the political commissars of the party, but was not able to hear either the beginning or the end of the meeting.

The outgoing leader, who joined the PAN in 2020, accused the PAN leader of being “spineless,” telling “a lot of lies,” and carrying out a “Stalinist purge” that is “killing the ideology” of the party.

“Politics is a space of farce, and Ines de Sousa Real creates this farce,” he criticized.

Regarding the accusations brought against him, Joaquim Sousa, who led the PAN candidacy in last Sunday’s elections (a list that was later changed), indicated that he had written a text in which he outlined the reasons why he would not vote for the PAN.

“After what I have been through, to think that I would vote for PAN is absurd. I’m not upset at all about writing it,” he said.

Joaquim Sousa also expressed regret that he was excluded from participating in the elections, given that Monica Freitas became the head of the list “under completely illegal and anti-legislative circumstances.”

PAN elected an MP in Sunday’s regional elections, which the PSD/CDU-PP coalition won without an absolute majority, and signed an agreement on parliamentary influence for the next four years.
