Orban: Ukraine is unlikely to join the European Union because of the war

Viktor Orban said it was unlikely that Ukraine would join the European Union because it was at war, in statements made to Hungarian state radio and quoted euronews.

“Can we start negotiations with a country that is in a state of territorial war? We do not know the size of the territory of this country, since it is still at war, and we do not know its population, because it is on the run,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister, for whom “accepting a country without knowing its parameters, would be unprecedented.”

“When I am in the House, I do not feel an overwhelming desire for the Hungarian parliament to vote for Ukraine to join the European Union within two years. Therefore, I would be careful with these ambitious plans,” Orban warned.

This Monday, the Hungarian Prime Minister assured that his government is also in no hurry to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership, demanding more respect from that country.
