Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to three scientists for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to scientists Mungi J. Bavendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” fundamental to nanotechnology. The committee announced this on Wednesday.

The Academy decided to recognize the work done by these researchers affiliated with North American universities responsible for the “discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” which are nanoparticles so small that their size ultimately determines their properties.

Quantum dots are tiny particles semiconductors that can be used in LED lights and television screens, and also help surgeons remove cancerous tissue.

After Medicine on Monday and Physics on Tuesday, this will be the third Nobel Prize announced, with awards for literature, peace and economics to follow in the coming days.

Mungi Bawendi is a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Louis Bruce works at Columbia University, and Alexey Ekimov works at Nanocrystal Technologies.

The monetary value of the Nobel Prizes is 11 million Swedish kronor (about 950 thousand euros). The money came from the legacy left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896.
