This Wednesday, the President of the Republic welcomed the outcome of the bid initially submitted by Portugal and Spain to organize the 2030 FIFA World Cup, considering it “exceeding expectations.”
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, with the opening matches to be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, the International Football Federation (FIFA) said on Wednesday.
In a short note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa states that “since the candidacy of Portugal and Spain was put forward” to organize this World Cup, he was convinced that it was “the winning candidacy”.
“The result today [esta quarta-feira] “The fame exceeds expectations because it has gone from a purely European candidacy to a European, African and South American candidacy, connecting countries with a common history,” adds the head of state.
The Iberian candidacy began in October 2020. In 2022, following the Russian invasion, it was extended to Ukraine, which was replaced by Morocco in March of this year.
Portugal will make their World Cup debut after hosting Euro 2004, Spain Euro 1964 and the 1982 World Cup, while Morocco hosted the African Cup of Nations (CAN) in 1988.
This will be the first time the World Cup will be shared between six countries. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will play three World Cup games to “celebrate the centenary” of the competition, the first of which took place in Uruguay in 1930.
