Israelis in Lisbon condemn hate messages at Porto synagogue

The Israeli Community of Lisbon (CIL) condemned this Wednesday the messages of hatred “cowardly written” on the wall and gate of a Porto synagogue following the armed conflict between Israel and the Islamic movement Hamas.

In a statement published on the social network Facebook, CIL said that “there is no place for intolerance and hatred in Portugal.”

“The acts of barbarity and terrorism committed by Hamas were and remain inhumane and should not be confused with the Palestinian cause. We do not confuse terrorists with the Palestinian people. We will not be intimidated,” he emphasizes.

Considering the act of vandalism outrageous and trusting the Portuguese authorities, CIL said the perpetrators must answer “in an exemplary manner for hate crimes before justice.”

“We are not dealing with an act of freedom of expression. We are in the realm of abuse, anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and attacks on the religious community and peaceful people. Political exploitation of the massacre and brutal mutilation of thousands of people. people are simply disgusting, and that is why we stand in solidarity with the Jewish community who have been victims of this deplorable act,” he adds.

The Porto synagogue, the largest on the Iberian Peninsula, was vandalized this Wednesday with the words “Liberate Palestine” on the wall and gate.

On Saturday, Hamas launched a surprise attack into Israel called Al-Aqsa Storm, firing thousands of rockets and invading armed militias by land, sea and air, killing more than a hundred hostages, civilians and military personnel.

In response to the surprise attack, Israel air-bombed several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in Operation Iron Swords, killing more than 900 people.

A senior Israeli military official said the death toll had exceeded 1,000.

Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2006 and is classified as a terrorist organization by the European Union, the United States and Israel.
