The court ordered the preventive detention of a 47-year-old man suspected of causing two forest fires in Moimenta da Beira earlier this month, a source from the Judicial Police (PJ) told Lusa this Thursday.
“The man was in preventive detention,” a source told PJ, who detained the suspect on Tuesday because he was “strictly charged with a crime related to a forest fire in Moimenta da Beira” in the district of Viseu.
According to the joint venture, the 47-year-old man is “suspected of organizing two fires in forest areas” that occurred on October 4, 2023.
The fires “consumed areas of forest land consisting of scrub and coastal pine populations and threatened a large forest area” in the municipality of Moimenta da Beira.
The flames threatened “maritime pine, oak and eucalyptus populations and agricultural areas” as well as “several chestnut and plum plantations.”
In the same area there are also “several buildings of significant value that were not burnt down only thanks to the rapid detection and intervention of firefighters,” the judicial police emphasized.
The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of the NP Vila Real in collaboration with the National Republican Guard (NGR) through the Center for Environmental Defense and the territorial post of Moimenta da Beira.
