Cardinal Américo Aguiar, who leads the October pilgrimage to Cova da Iria, will present Our Lady with the wooden staff he used in ceremonies on Thursday and Friday, the Fatima Sanctuary said.
“This staff was given to me by Caritas Jerusalem in Belém on the occasion of my visit last July on the occasion of WYD in Lisbon 2023. [da peregrinação] I will offer it to Our Lady, asking her special intercession for peace in the land of Jesus, in Ukraine and in many other regions and hearts,” the future Bishop of Setúbal said in statements released by the sanctuary.
In addition to the crozier – the crozier used by prelates – Americo Aguiar will also leave the WYD bishop’s cross and the cardinal’s ring in Fatima.
“I do this as a sign of gratitude to Our Lady for her unconditional support of what WYD was: the preparation and the experience, and what should continue to happen in the hearts of young pilgrims,” the cardinal said.
The offerings will be placed next to the image of Our Lady at the end of the pilgrimage, marking the 106th anniversary of Our Lady’s last appearance to the shepherd children in 1917, according to the Shrine of Fatima.
