International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director-General Kristalina Georgieva stressed this Saturday the need to find ways to avoid civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip and expressed hope that peace will soon return to the region.
At a press conference following a meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, Georgieva condemned the tragedy that occurred in Israel over the weekend and emphasized the need to prevent the deaths of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army informed the population of the northern Gaza Strip that they had until 16:00 local time (13:00 Lisbon time) to move south of the enclave along certain roads, which, according to Georgieva, would not be bombed until then.
The IMF director said it was too early to assess the economic impact of the conflict, but stressed it was another source of uncertainty for the global economy, affecting prices and markets.
A week ago, the Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets and invading armed militias by land, sea and air.
In response, Israel bombed several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip from the air and imposed a complete blockade of the territory, cutting off supplies of water, fuel and electricity.
The attacks have already killed and injured thousands of people in both territories.
