On Tuesday, the justice department of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) officially announced sanctions against Italian midfielder Nicolo Fagioli of Juventus, who was banned for seven months for illegal betting, as well as forced to pay a fine and undergo treatment.
“We have reached an agreement with Fagioli, after which he will be punished with a 12-month ban, five of which commuted to other forms of sanctions, as well as a fine of €12,500 for breaching the rules prohibiting betting on organized football events. FIGK, UEFA and FIFA”, can be read in the federal statement.
The five months he will not serve is replaced by public speaking and other community work, in addition to a “therapeutic plan of at least six months” that he will be required to comply with.
Fagioli was the first to emerge in the illegal betting “scandal”, which also involves Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, whose agent has already admitted he is suffering from the addition to the game.
Aston Villa’s Zaniolo is also under the jurisdiction of sports justice after the situation led to him being removed from the Italy squad, which also happened to Tonali.
Fagioli admitted betting on football matches without participating in them, which is prohibited, cooperating and admitting to a gambling addiction, and has now missed the entire season at Juventus.
