The biweekly debate with the Prime Minister returns this Wednesday to the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic in a different format, similar to that in force until 2020.
At a time when the political agenda is dominated by proposals for the 2024 state budget at home and the conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas outside, António Costa will answer questions from PS, PSD, Chega, Liberal Initiative, PCP. , BE, PAN and Livre in a debate expected to last 99 minutes.
This new model of debate is the result of a revision of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly of the Republic, approved by consensus last July.
After two weeks of debate, the chief executive will remain in plenary for preparatory debates for the European Council next week.
Under the previous model, which was only approved by the PS and PSD in July 2020, the Prime Minister had a normative obligation to attend the plenary every two months to discuss general policy.
Starting this Wednesday, as was the case until 2020, the fortnightly debate with the Prime Minister will have two alternating formats: the first month initiated by the head of government, and the second by the parties, alternating whichever one opens.
These debates will again consist of one round (instead of two in the old model) and last between 109 and 99 minutes (up from the previous 180).
This Wednesday’s debate will take place in the second format. It will be opened by the PS (followed by the PSD, Chega, Liberal Initiative, PCP, BE, PAN and Livre) and will last 99 minutes before preparatory debates for the European Council begin next week.
