Spanish footballer Jenny Hermoso returns to the national team after being “spared” as a protective measure in previous games, given the controversy that arose in the World Cup final.
The striker was left out of the squad for September’s Nations League games against Sweden and Switzerland following the departure of previous coach Jorge Vilda and the arrival of assistant Montse Thome.
Jenny Hermoso found herself at the center of a scandal when, after the final in which Spain won the world title against England (1-0) in Sydney, she was kissed on the lips by former federation president Luis Rubiales.
The situation led to accusations from both sides, with the player claiming it was not a consensual kiss, contrary to what the previous president had said, in an incident that resulted in a criminal investigation and Rubiales going to court.
The previous president was also suspended by FIFA and several public organizations asked him to resign in a scenario that he initially refused but which was eventually implemented on September 10.
“After the imminent suspension by FIFA, in addition to other cases brought against me, it is clear that I will not be able to return to my position. Insisting on waiting and holding out will not contribute anything positive either to the Federation or to Spanish football,” the former RFEF president noted at the time.
The Spanish women’s national team, which in addition to Jenny Hermoso also includes Ivana Andrés, Salma Paralluelo and Esther Gonzalez, will visit Italy (October 27) and Switzerland (October 31) as part of the next Nations League Group 4 games.
