Argentinean Papu Gomez, 35, was accused of using doping substances and was banned for two years, according to the Spanish newspaper Relevo.
The player, who now represents Italian side Monza, tested positive in a test taken in November 2022, shortly before the World Cup in Qatar, where he would eventually become world champion with Argentina.
The collection was carried out while he was still representing Sevilla, as a result of unexpected control. The player explained the presence of a prohibited substance in his body by saying that after a sleepless night he drank some baby syrup without first consulting the club’s doctors.
Relevo further reports that the player and Sevilla knew about the positive control several months ago when they received the notification. The sanctions became known only last week. The case even led to the termination of Papu Gomez’s contract with the Andalusians, which only ended in June 2024.
