Eagle flies low over the Azores

Benfica beat Lusitania in the Azores 4-1 this Friday and remain in the Portuguese Cup despite a lackluster performance.

Lusitania’s resistance from the Portuguese Championship lasted just nine minutes when Joao Mario gave Benfica the lead. Despite the lack of pressure intensity, the Eagle eventually flew, but softly, in a game in which the Azoreans played heroically. They distributed the ball well due to the Reds lack of aggression and Cabral was the most dangerous player with two bombs in the Reds goal.

But Benfica’s individual talent ultimately prevailed on a pitch whose condition had deteriorated over time due to heavy rain. Rafa eventually increased the lead when he found himself alone in front of the goalkeeper after a good pass from Chiquinho.

There was still a surprise in store for the first half, when Orsnes scored a penalty, which was converted by Enzo Ferrara (2-1).

Artur Cabral shone in the second half, scoring a hat-trick to make it 3-1, his first goal in eight appearances for Benfica. And the most beautiful goal was scored at the end: Thiago Gouveia scored the score 4:1 after an individual play. The result is fair and much better than Roger Schmidt’s team.

AND

SCHMIDT “HAPPY TO VICTORY”

“We are happy about the victory. It was a special game, a long journey, special atmospheric conditions. These teams always give their all, but we did well, won the game and that was the most important thing,” said Roger Schmidt, who believed Arthur’s goal would give him “motivation” for the future.

JOAU MARIO IS SATISFIED

“We were serious, competent and played against a good opponent,” João Mário, Benfica’s first goal, said this Friday with a backheel.
