The FPF appealed the amnesty applied to a coach accused of sexual harassment

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) will appeal the amnesty applied to coach Miguel Afonso, accused of sexual harassment, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD), a source of the organization confirmed this Saturday to Lusa.

The TAD has decided to lift the suspension of Miguel Afonso, accused of sexually assaulting players he coached in Rio Ave, based on an amnesty ruling in connection with Pope Francis’ visit to Portugal on the occasion of World Youth Day (WYD).

An official FPF source contacted by Lusa confirmed the appeal to the Central Administrative Court of the South (TCAS) against the TAD’s decision to overturn five disciplinary offenses committed by former Famalican women’s team coach Miguel Afonso, who was punished with a 35-month ban and a fine of €5,100 .

On July 11, TAD confirmed the 35-month suspension of Miguel Afonso, former coach of the Famalican women’s team, by the FPF Disciplinary Council (CD) for sexual harassment and discrimination.

On November 3, Miguel Afonso was punished with a 35-month ban and a fine of €5,100 by the FPF for “committing five very serious disciplinary offenses” resulting from “discriminatory behavior on the grounds of gender and/or sexual orientation.” , 2022.

The 41-year-old coach challenged the verdict with TAD, which upheld the punishment, which dates back to the start of the 2020/21 season when he coached the Rio Ave women’s team.

Miguel Afonso has been the subject of complaints from Rio Ave players during the 2020/21 season, the newspaper reports. Publicthat gave way to others about the former coach Bonitos de Amorima (2019/20) and Ovarens (2021/22), and later about Famalican, who disqualified him.

On October 9, Miguel Afonso requested amnesty from the sentence in the FPF CD, which did not consider the application, while the TAD analyzed this appeal and stated that the CD argument was invalid since the appellant had not yet been sentenced to commit any crime. there is also no knowledge of any criminal case.

Thus, TAD considered that the violations for which Miguel Afonso was convicted and which have now been corrected fall within the scope of the amnesty.
