The criminal case against FIFA President Gianni Infantino related to the so-called “Lauber case” has been closed without any charges, the organization announced this Thursday on its website.
“This is a complete and clear victory for me, the new FIFA and justice,” said Gianni Infantino, reacting to the decision of Swiss federal special prosecutors Hans Maurer and Ulrich Weder.
Infantino held meetings with former Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber in 2016, shortly after he was elected FIFA president, during a wide-ranging investigation into corruption in international football.
Lauber left office in 2020 following meetings with Infantino after he was found to have misled and obstructed the watchdog that supervised federal prosecutors.
Special prosecutor Stefan Keller was appointed to investigate alleged wrongdoing by the FIFA president but was removed from his post after Infantino complained of bias.
Keller was then replaced in the investigation by Hans Maurer and Ulrich Weder.
“It is now clear that the accusations against me were just attempts by poor, envious and corrupt people to attack my reputation. If these people still have any dignity, they should at least show some decency and apologize for their actions and the damage they caused.” – said Infantino.
The FIFA chief added: “In fact, and unsurprisingly, the investigation fully and clearly confirms that I have always acted lawfully and correctly, always protecting the sole interests of FIFA and football.”
