Manchester United player Alejandro Garnacho risks being punished for posting on social media an image of Cameroonian Andre Onana accompanied by two gorilla “emoticons”.
The Argentine posted a photo to celebrate the goalkeeper saving a penalty in the final minutes of the game, allowing the English team to beat Copenhagen in the Champions League. A post that is subsequently removed may be blocked if it is considered racist.
Onana has already reacted and defended his colleague, saying that he understands perfectly well what Garnacho meant by the publication. “People can’t choose what I’m offended by. I know exactly what he meant: strength and power. This case needs to be closed,” he wrote.
This is not the first time that a message of this type has resulted in a ban. Recall that in 2019, Portuguese Bernardo Silva was disqualified for one game and forced to pay a fine of more than 57 thousand euros for sharing an image of his colleague Benjamin Mendy with the logo of the chocolate brand Conguitos.
The ex-Benfica player said it was a joke between friends with no intention of offending anyone, but the English Football Association ruled it was “not a conversation between friends.”
In 2021, Edinson Cavani was suspended for three games and fined almost 115 thousand euros for a publication in Spanish that was considered racially offensive.
