The last lunar eclipse of 2023 is scheduled for this Saturday and will be visible in several countries, including Portugal. In early October, a lunar eclipse of the Sun was visible on Earth, but this time the Moon will also be eclipsed. The eclipse is expected to begin around 19:00 (Portuguese time) and end when the Moon enters its penumbral phase, around 23:26.
The eclipse will reportedly be visible in Europe, Asia and Africa. Space.com and will occur during the full moon in October – the so-called Hunter’s Moon – since lunar eclipses require a full moon. Eclipses occur only when the full Moon approaches the intersection points of the Earth and Moon’s orbital paths.
However, this weekend’s eclipse will only be a partial lunar eclipse because the Earth, Moon and Sun will not be perfectly aligned, meaning only a small portion of the Moon will be under Earth’s shadow, the umbra. Thus, the Moon will appear slightly darker than usual due to its penumbral phase.
This will be the last partial eclipse of the year, as the next one will not occur until September 2024.
