The hockey world is mourning the death of Adam Johnson, a player who died this Saturday at the age of 29 after being brutally struck in the throat by an opponent’s skate blade.
On the play in question, which occurred during a Nottingham Panthers game, Johnson had control of the puck when two players near the North American collided and fell. After this spectacular fall, Johnson was hit in the throat with a skate.
Johnson initially fell and, bleeding, managed to get up and roll to the bench with the help of a teammate. Hours later, after receiving medical attention, he did not survive.
The meeting was interrupted and the remaining games that day were postponed.
“Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following an incident during the game in Sheffield last night,” the team said in a statement.
Throughout his career, Johnson represented teams such as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers before joining the Nottingham Panthers.
