On Monday morning, an Aveiro court sentenced a man to a suspended prison term of two years and four months for stealing an electrical wire from a pharmacy in 2017.
At the same trial, the defendant was cleared of the brutal attack on an 86-year-old woman, committed 15 days earlier, also in Vagos.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the 32-year-old defendant entered the victim’s house early in the morning through a hole in the roof.
An 86-year-old woman was lying in her bedroom and sleeping. According to the public charge, the man sat on the woman to restrain her and wrapped an electrical cord around her neck until the victim lost consciousness.
The victim was found panicked, with a thread wrapped around his neck and black bruises all over his body, relatives said.
A man stole a pound gold earring that a woman had in her ear. After searching the house, he escaped with 10 euros and a TV.
The defendant was found guilty of qualified theft. The man was acquitted of charges of aggravated robbery and possession of a prohibited weapon.
