Australia decided on Tuesday to abandon its bid to host the 2034 World Cup, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as the favorite to host the 2034 World Cup.
“We have explored the possibility of bidding to host the FIFA World Cup and, having considered all factors, have decided not to do so for the 2034 competition,” the country’s football federation, Football Australia, said in a statement.
After announcing that it was in talks with Australia for a joint bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the Indonesian Football Federation ten days ago finally backed Saudi Arabia’s bid, which had already been officially backed by the Asian Football Confederation.
FIFA has set the application deadline for this Tuesday.
After appointing Spain, Morocco and Portugal as hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup in early October, FIFA opened a call for entries for the next edition, limiting it to the confederations of Asia and Oceania in accordance with the principle of rotation.
Saudi Arabia, which has already set its sights on the 2030 World Cup, is now investing to make a name for itself in world football, as are the country’s clubs, which managed to attract Frenchman Karim Benzema and Brazilian Neymar this summer.
