FIFA confirmed on Tuesday that the 2034 FIFA World Cup will be staged in Saudi Arabia. The announcement came hours after Australia withdrew its bid to host the competition and was made via an Instagram post by the president of the body that oversees world football, Gianni Infantino.
“The greatest spectacle on planet Earth will be organized by Canada, Mexico and the United States in 2026 – in North America. The next two FIFA World Cups will be held in Africa (Morocco) and Europe (Portugal and Spain). – with three memorable games played in South America (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) – in 2030 and in Asia (Saudi Arabia) in 2034. Three editions, five continents and ten countries are involved in organizing the games of the tournament – that is, making football truly global,” it can be read.
In the same publication, Infantino states that the competition’s bidding processes were “approved by consensus” by the FIFA council “following constructive dialogue and extensive consultation.” The FIFA President thanked all participants for participating in the “positive exchange.”
“At a time when we live in an increasingly divided and violent world, we show once again that football, the world’s premier sport, unites like no other. We all need these opportunities to unite, and the upcoming World Cup is a unique force for good in this regard,” Infantino concluded.
