Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two, was surprised by Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Paris on Tuesday, losing in straight sets.
Eliminated in the first round of the French Masters 1000, Alcaraz lost to the 45th ranked ATP player 6-3 to 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes.
The 20-year-old Spaniard withdrew from the Basel tournament last week due to inflammation in his left foot and lower back pain.
The young Murcian has not won a trophy since defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, having been disappointed on the Asian tour, where he only reached the semi-finals at the Beijing tournament.
For the first time this season, Alcaraz lost his first match at the tournament, complicating his bid to finish the year as world number one, now dependent on the performance of Novak Djokovic, the ATP ranking leader.
