The clinical director of the Amato Lusitano Hospital (HAL) in Castelo Branco guaranteed this Thursday that the general surgery service is only in “difficulties”, but suggested that the scale could be adjusted.
“To Castelo Branco [HAL], there is only one service that is struggling: general surgery. Now it will be three or four days. We just called the director of the general surgery service and told her that there are opportunities to frankly improve the scale,” Eugenia Andre told Lusa.
On Wednesday, the Doctors in Action movement announced that in a total of 38 hospital departments, about 90% of services are unavailable because there are not enough doctors to cover shifts.
Médicos em Luta spokeswoman Susana Costa said the list is updated almost every day and that information about the impact on hospitals is provided by doctors.
The online list is broken down by the names of hospital departments and specialties that have been hit hardest, including Castelo Branca. Speaking to Lusa, HAL’s clinical director explained that she will be meeting with the head of general surgery today to try to resolve the situation affecting the medical department of Castelo Branco Hospital.
This is because the scale can be improved: “Why? Because sometimes I have three surgeons on the scale, and I don’t need to have three surgeons on the scale. So, we can try to adjust something there.”
Evgenia Andre also emphasized that the remaining scales do not present problems and are complete. “There is a day when the orthopedic service fails, but that happens at the end of the month [novembro]I am confident that we will also reach a successful conclusion. It’s not significant. The Emergency Department is operating as normal, without any restrictions. The rest of the scales are intact,” he said.
