Trainee teachers will now be able to teach and run their own classes in addition to the regular supported classes that have been provided so far, the Education Minister said.
At the end of the meeting of the Council of Ministers, João Costa explained that 1,300 teachers are being trained and that they can begin teaching from the next academic year, as soon as they enter the second year of their internship, which will be paid. A government official admitted that this number needs to be increased as 30,000 teachers will be needed by 2030.
João Costa also said that higher education institutions now have autonomy in assessing the profile of candidates and the possibility of master’s degrees and advanced training that open access to teaching careers.
According to the minister, when adapting qualifications, “levelling occurs not from below, but from above.”
Supervising faculty may supervise up to four trainees, entitled to three hours per week devoted to the first candidate and one to each of the others.
