Judoka Katarina Costa finished second in Europe in the 48kg weight category this Friday, winning her second silver at the European Championships, this time in the final held in Montpellier.
Katarina Costa, who was runner-up at the European Championships in Sofia in 2022, again secured her final against the same opponent who beat her in the Bulgarian capital, France’s Shirin Boucli, the world’s runner-up in the bantamweight division. women’s category.
In today’s decision at the Sud de France, the judoka from the Coimbra Academy took the fight to the golden count, an extra period after the first four minutes in which whoever scores first guarantees victory.
Without favoritism, Catarina Costa, ranked eighth in the rankings, practically lost: Boucli performed a waza-ari in the first 11 seconds, but the Portuguese judoka, under the guidance of her coach João Neto, did not lose concentration.
After punishing both judokas in two minutes, Katarina Costa finally leveled the fight, also with the help of a waza-ari performed by sode (hip and arm throw technique), with 1.26 minutes left.
In “extra time”, in an open fight, with the idea that victory could belong to either side, Boucli secured victory with another waza-ari with a score of 1.26 (5.26 in the fight total).
Before reaching the final, the Portuguese judoka beat Austrian Katarina Tanzer (27th place), Spaniard Laura Martinez Abelenda (12th place) and Slovenian Marusa Stangar (17th place).
