Striker Luis Diaz scores for Liverpool and calls for his father to be freed

Liverpool’s Colombian striker Luis Diaz entered the second half of Sunday’s Premier League match in Luton, Britain, awaiting the promised release of his father, who was kidnapped by Colombian guerrillas. The striker scored a goal and dedicated it to his father, asking for his release.

Liverpool fans sang and cheered for Diaz during the warm-up at Kenilworth Road.

The 26-year-old was absent from last weekend’s game after his mother Silenis Marulanda and father Luis Manuel Diaz were kidnapped by gunmen in northern Colombia. The mother was released hours later, and on Thursday National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas said they would release the father.

“It’s still very emotional, but three days ago Luiz decided he wanted to get back to training,” manager Jurgen Klopp said before the game.

“All the signals he receives, as far as I know, are very positive. The negotiations continue, but they continue to be positive, and that is why he wants to be part of the team and can also go on the field… No one can imagine what it is like in such a situation. He feels good in training and that is why he is here,” he added.
