A Portuguese national living in Hong Kong is facing trial in Chinese courts for inciting subversion and faces a prison sentence of ten years. Joseph John, 41, has been in custody since October 2022, but his trial will not begin until February.
According to the prosecution, we are talking about publications on Facebook. Joseph John was the administrator of the Hong Kong Independence Party page and began a campaign to raise funds for military expenses and petition foreign governments to send troops, claiming that China was “illegally occupying” Hong Kong.
Portugal’s Consul General in Macau and Hong Kong, Alexandre Leitan, attended the court’s preliminary hearing last week. Since 1997, the former British colony has been under Beijing’s control.
