The fire that broke out this Monday at a pig farm in Estremoz (Evora), where “about 3 thousand pigs” were kept, has already been contained, but there is no estimate yet for the number of piglets killed, Civil Defense sources said.
A source from the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Central Alentejo said the fire, which firefighters were alerted to at 9:13 a.m., was brought under control by 12:05 p.m.
Estremos Municipal Civil Protection head Januario Coradinho, who was also contacted by Lusa, said it was “probable” that there were dead animals inside the fire-damaged pavilion where the piglets were kept.
“We are talking about young pigs, piglets. The pavilion is divided” and should accommodate “about 3 thousand heads,” he said.
However, the same person in charge has declined to provide an estimate of the number of piglets killed at this time.
Januário Coradinho explained that during the operations in Monte da Coelha, near the National Bandstand 4 (EN4), in União das Fregesias do Ameixial (Santa Vitória and São Bento), the authorities removed from the site ” a lot of pigs.
