A man arrested in 2022 in Abrantes for sexually assaulting a person unable to resist has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison, suspended, but will appeal the sentence, a lawyer said on Monday.
“I will appeal the verdict and take it to the Supreme Court for consideration. [Relação de Évora] for disagreeing with a proven fact,” the lawyer of the accused, a civil servant and scout leader living in Rossio, south of the Tagus, in the municipality of Abrantes (Santarem), told Lusa this Monday.
The 54-year-old man was arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) in December 2022 for sexual assault of an incapacitated person and sentenced on Tuesday by the Santarém court to four years and three months in prison, suspended for four years. of the 13 crimes with which he was accused, and he was also banned for eight years from carrying out any activities related to contact with minors, the lawyer told Lusa.
According to the lawyer, the judges convicted the defendant of “four of the 13 crimes” of sexual assault against a person unable to resist with which he was accused, and he was “acquitted of nine.”
The lawyer emphasized that the man has no criminal record and recalled that he “worked with young people for more than 20 years” as part of scout troops.
We are talking about alleged crimes that were committed at a youth reception center in the Abrantes area against a young man with severe disabilities and where the accused worked on a voluntary basis.
Appearing before the judge on December 27, 2022, the accused waited for the investigation to unfold in his home under electronic surveillance, a Judicial Police (PJ) source told Lusa at the time.
