In 2016 mother Mayan Kowalski, Beata Kowalski, took his daughter, who was 10 years old at the time, to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital and told doctors that the girl suffered from chronic abdominal pain, which required treatment with ketamine to cope with the pain. Due to the child’s condition, doctors decided to hospitalize the girl and call social services. Maya was taken from her parents, who were not allowed to visit the girl during 85 days and were charged with child abuse. Beata Kowalski committed suicide in the garage of her family’s home.
Claiming that the hospital unfairly admitted Maya and cruelly separated her from her mother, the Kowalski family sued the hospital for more than €206 million.
The child suffered from a rare neurological disease that can cause severe and widespread pain due to dysfunction of the nervous system. However, doctors believed that Beata Kowalski, who worked as a nurse, suffered from Munchausen syndrome by Proxy, in which educators invent or exaggerate the child’s illnesses.
