Tens of thousands of people march for climate change in Amsterdam 10 days before elections

Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Amsterdam this Sunday demanding more action on climate change, in protest just 10 days before legislative elections.

Organizers said 70,000 people took part in the march and called it the largest climate protest in Dutch history.

Activist Greta Thunberg was among those walking through the historic center of the Dutch capital, and former European Union climate chief Frans Timmermans, who now heads the center-left bloc and two parties in the election campaign, were among the speakers speaking to the crowd gathered in the square behind the famous Rijksmuseum.

“We live in times of crises, and they are all the result of political choices made. This must be done and can be done differently,” said a statement from an organizer with the Climate Crisis Coalition, which called for the march.

Although the coalition included the youth movement Fridays for Future, the protesters were of all ages and included a large contingent of doctors wearing white coats and holding a sign that read: “Climate crisis = health crisis.”

“I’m a pediatrician. I’m here to defend children’s rights,” said Laura Zonneveld, who took part in the march.

“Children are the first to be affected by climate change,” he added.

The fight against climate change is one of the main policy areas of the parties running in the general elections on November 22.
